  1. Thanks Benny that was a very detailed and very thought out answer, I really appreciate you taking the time, as I do you hotfoot. I still think you guys might have the wrong impression from this post though. I'm not asking because I'm thinking about modding my bike or changing my set up, I'm just trying to understand why people do it. Your answer Benny, covers that very well though. I fully understand the concept of the wheel base getting shorter and how the suspensions job is to keep the contact patch the right size and in contact with the ground. Sometimes I think people make unnecessary mods to their bike just to make it look cool or for bragging rights or what ever. Prime example is quick shifters, they are a complete waste on road bikes. But that was pretty much the thought process behind the question, it's just understanding is the adjustable suspension and pre-load a necessary feature on modern bikes or a vanity accessory?
  2. Thanks for the replies. I guess I can just wont fully understand until I ride track. Csmith, I really want to do ... neigh... NEED to do a track day. It's an experience I think I'm lacking and while I don't believe for a moment I have learned all I can on the street, I strongly feel that track riding is a skill on its own that I need to acquire to improve on the street.
  3. Ouch! Apologies to anyone who thinks me posting that picture is a little insensitive, I honestly didn't know about that.
  4. The important thing is to get used to the timing of clutch in, shift and releasing the clutch. A lot of people get in the habit of lazy shifting, I know I do it a lot when I'm riding around town. I find it's easier to practice on an open road where I can ride at a comfortable speed with out fear of breaking the speed limit or having traffic in front of me. In case you don't know, lazy shift is when you hold the clutch in for longer than needed or you release it slowly. Bring in that clutch lever, shift your gear and release the clutch as soon as your done.
  5. Not being a track rider I can't speak from experience in terms of speed. My playground is on mountain and country roads where the conditions of the road can change from one day to the next. I seldom use my back brake except for in slow moving traffic, maneuvering on a gradient and in the wet when I don't want my front end to slide out from under me by grabbing too much front brake. So I basically just use my back brake to feather my braking, it makes breaking a lot less harsh and is essential around town in slow moving traffic.
  6. Maybe this sounds like a stupid question. But considering I have never done a track day I don't understand what benefit adjusting springs and suspension has. In my view, the bike manufacturers build the bike so that every thing works the way it's designed to. So why mess with it? i can understand heavier riders needing to stiffen their springs and shocks, but apart from that if the suspensions sweet spot is in the mid range, why mess with it?
  7. They look like stretch marks so expansion is a good theory but they only go around about 20% of the tire. Also the grooves start off shallow, get deeper in the middle and then fade out again. Definitely looks like skidding on something to me.
  8. Current predicament? I haven't watched a race for sometime now... Last I knew he retired, then heard a rumor he was coming back, so whats happened since?
  9. Considering the fact that #77 is Michael Schumacher he is probably thinking to himself, I should have stuck to Formula 1!
  10. I haven't done a track day yet, I know I need to get some track time under my belt to improve my riding so that is way up there on my list. I'm riding from Gibraltar to the UK in August for the Bull Dog Bash. Other than that I want to push my boundaries and get out of my comfort zone more.
  11. Thanks all for your replies, it's good to be here and am looking forward to getting to know you all and become a part of this community.
  12. haha ya know I hadn't thought of that. With any luck she's one of those people who lives in one of the areas frequently visited by the monkeys I am 100% street rider. I have never done a track day, but my aim for 2014 is to get on the track at least once. I am extremely lucky in that due to my geographical location Jerez is just an hours ride away so I want to get up there for a day. Even though I've never done a track day I can see the advantages of it and I think it is the next logical step for me and the only way I am going to improve my riding. I'm planning on riding from Gibraltar to the UK in August for the Bull Dog Bash. It's a 700 mile ride from here to Bilbao where I'll take a ferry to the UK. I think that is going to help improve my riding too as it's the furthest out I've ever gone and I'll be riding solo. I think anything that takes you out of your comfort zone helps you grow. So those are my two aims for the year.
  13. Hello all, As you can see my name is Darth Peachy, no I didn't have cruel parents that isn't my real name. I use that name because that's what most people I am in regular contact with on youtube, google+ and other forums know me as so I thought better to keep the same name. My real name is Chris, I'm 31, born in London England and currently live in Gibraltar with my wife Amanda and 3 year old son Max. he wasn't named after Max Biaggi but as an after thought he should have been! i joined the forum because i watched Twist of the wrist II on youtube about a year ago and it has helped improve my riding tremendously. I was so impressed that I went and bought the book and the DVD so that any time I want to push my limits or work on an area of my riding that I feel needs improving or even just as a way of boosting my confidence on days when I just don't feel grounded I can just refer back to it. I was watching the DVD again recently and feeling enlightened and inspired I decided to do a Google search for Keith Code. I found this forum and decided to sign up. I've been riding bikes (commuting) for 15 years now but it has only been in the last 3 years that I have taken riding more seriously and taken steps to become a better rider. As I mentioned before I have a youtube channel where I record How To videos on motorcycle maintenance, vlogs and am currently working on a road safety series for the benefit of new riders. If any one would like to take a look just search for Darth Peachy or Peachy's Place or send me a PM because I don't think were allowed to post links up on here and wouldn't want to upset the mods on my first post Ok mamoth intro, gonna stop nattering now (here at least) see ya all around the forum. Chris
