  1. Sure, Oct 2017, set out for a group ride with some friends. Morning started off fine, met up with my friends and first stretch was no problem. After our first stop and second stretch I blacked out on the ride which I was leading mind you. Luckily I blacked out while going relatively slow and basically bike just kept going down and down on a turn lol. I guess my body just went completely limp and tumbled around and ended up on the side of the road. I was laying still for a bit and my friends called the paramedics. All this is from my friends telling me; as I don't remember anything after the 2nd stop meeting up with my friends (and I only remember that day because I have pictures of us meeting up). By the time the paramedics arrived I had gotten up on my feet and felt fine and such probably adrenaline or something. Shortly after they arrived and talking to them I had a seizure and collapsed where my heart stopped. They used the defibrillator on me for about 10-15mins I was told. I ended up in the hospital which I remember almost nothing for the first 6 weeks or so. Basically was in an induced coma for most of it to recover. I did fracture my scapula and cracked a couple ribs but my heart sustained significant damage during the time it wasn't pumping (they call it the widowmaker veins? that wasn't getting blood). I ended up with a tracheotomy, feeding tube for the 2 months I was in the hospital went from 178lbs to something like 135lbs. Could barely move but most of my pain was from my frozen shoulder because I wasn't moving for the entire time in the hospital bed. Sometime during my stay got transferred out of ICU got transferred to another hospital to be closer to home and recover. Finally got home at the end of December. Against doctors orders I started eating real food w/ the trach in my throat because I was starving and too weak. Started able to move about end of January, began cardiac rehab for about 3 months. Had an elective defibrillator implant put in just in case something like this was to ever happen again. By May my heart had regained some function that was lost but will never be 100%. And June was back to being able to lift my legs over a bike so went off and bought me a 2018 Ducati V4S and been riding that since. Funny enough my bike that crashed sustained minor damage, mostly cosmetic since it was slow enough, it did have an oil leak so my friend replaced the oil pan but no cracks seemed it just broke the seal. I have no family history of heart disease, one of those weird flukes, I was 44 at the time. 1 1/2 years now and no issues; riding daily. Crazy stories are the lucid dreams I had at the hospital during my heavily medicated state lol. Had my wife and some great friends visit me during my hospital stay; someone tried to stay with me daily. And friends that came by daily once I got home to bring me meals. Also I got fed up staying at the hospital once I got moved to the other hospital and the nurses there were horrible. So I checked myself out basically; my good friend came to visit me and told him to get the doctor because I'm not staying here no more. I told them I'm refusing treatment and get me outta here; had to sign a bunch of release forms but I didn't care at that point, and the doctors had no choice to let me go. Friends had to carry me pretty much but I got home; in a lot of pain but road to recovery. While the hospital intentions were good lack of nutrition and proper care at some point just got me weaker. I recovered quickly once I got home and began eating again. Disappointing thing is my GoPro was on the rear and accidentally got put in still photos mode so no footage other than my friends looking at my camera trying to figure out if it's on and such. Helmet has a nice big gash on the side from hitting a rock; full leathers help sustain no scratches. And I now have a crazy bike story to tell.
  2. Forgot about CSS for a bit; haven't been around this forums since I had a heart attack in Oct 2017... WHILE RIDING... lol That's for another time but yeah crazy stuff; anyways finally started riding this past June when I could walk around again. Anyways was looking at couple schools this year to get some skills back and might do both CSS and YCRS this time for comparison; since I didn't get to last time due to unforeseeable circumstances 😛 So last time I finished lvls 1-4; I had that semi bad experience for a bit on lvl 3 and you guys made things right immediately even though you didn't have to. Hopefully I make it to CSS next month back at NJMP.

That would normally be the scenario; consistent road/track conditions regardless of if it's rain or not is better... we know we can ride in the rain and wet roads just a little slower and less abrupt inputs. With light precipitation there could be slicker parts which would be a similar situation to say riding in normal conditions with a slick patch. So yes you could have been in a spot that's a little less wet and have a little more traction followed by a patch of water and lose traction which started the whole mess. Jaybird - I don't go to the track except for the days at CSS; I ride mainly street usual group rides with the MD groups here.

Hard to tell of course; but since it's in the rain and judging from the sound that little bit of throttle could have cause the initial loss of traction causing the rear to slide out then the high side is when the rear regains traction and from the rain it's not hard to go from slick to a spot it can grip once again when the throttle is cut. Even if you maintained the throttle during the slide the wet track would have helped cause the high side; one escape would be to throttle more and keep the rear sliding and bring traction back slowly... easier said then done of course I have a wicked slide on wet roads a little while back on the streets where I was a little abrupt on the turn but held the throttle and just slide all the across through the turn (luckily no oncoming traffic) and kept riding on; the video is helmet mounted and hard to tell what's going on in mine except you see me go from one side of the road to the other as I'm in the turn. Jaybird... you're in my neck of the woods... have we met out here?
  5. Already rebuilt the suspension, which it needed badly, I understand the reason for sag... Question is about why most just suggest a value, and what is based on, vs Keith's video on sag suggesting % of travel. There's a safe range and tweak based on personal preference... Paying to have it set isn't an issue, issue is with everyone doing things a little differently. On the 06 and earlier CBR the front and rear travel is the same, the 07-12 the rear has more travel, if sag is independent of total travel then the initial value can be whatever those videos state, if it's dependent then...?
  6. So after my last issue with my suspension I had a question about SAG. In Keith's videos he says you want 20-30% of suspension travel front/rear for track 30-40% road... My issue isn't which percentage but the difference between front and rear. Let's say I chose 30% do I set 30% on front and rear? Or is it independent; because for those that offer mm or in. travel settings always recommend more SAG in the front for some reason; like 35-40mm in the front and 30-35mm rear for road. I understand it's just a baseline and eventual setting will depend on how you ride and how the bike feels to you. I'm just trying to get an understanding of the baseline for now as I've been tweaking it slowly after every ride to see what I prefer. If I go based on specifications on the bike (2012 Honda CBR600RR) then the front suspension travel is 110mm while the rear is 129mm; so any % I take would make the front shorter SAG. A little insight please... Also currently I prefer a little stiffer front on my bike because the front stock forks are and loves to nose dive every chance it gets; I think I have it close to where I want it so it's not that bad.

So 2 days after level 4 (CSS and lvls 1-4 done within a 4 week period; and the only track/school experience I have) I went to the Tail of the Dragon in NC; on my stock 2012 Honda CBR600RR and managed to experience what could only be my rear squatting. Literally I steer into the turn and I'm at a lean then felt the rear sit down into the turn and the bike would pretty much go straight at lean; feeling like the rear just would not come around; the tail of the dragon is mostly banked turns making everyone seem like a pro but definitely doesn't help if your suspension isn't set up. Now I ride mainly street and prior to CSS no where close to riding "hard" or corner all that well (apparently; so I learned) and suspension settings were a non issue even at stock settings. Was it possible to outgrow one's stock suspension just after 4 CSS classes? Apart from having the incorrect settings to begin with I would have to say yes. I do know my cornering speed increased significantly from lvl 2 to lvl 4 on average by 20% based on my personal footage with gps speeds. We bandaged the suspension for the time being but with such little adjustments on the CBR my rebound is all the way out atm. Maybe I'm wrong and had nothing to do w/ my suspension but afterwards I was good to go for the weekend ride in NC. Do people experience outgrowing suspension after CSS especially those going from average street rider to attending CSS? (Mind you my weight is near the max for the CBR600RR with gear)
  8. This is John Lee by the way... the one that ran into a little hiccup on my level 3 day. You guys went way above and beyond what was necessary and just wanted to say thank you again. Laura you were totally awesome looking out for me without hesitation. I noticed after reviewing some of my lap footage that between lvl 1+2 earlier in the month I didn't bother opening up the bike on the straights and just focused on the drills and cornering; and by level 4 I improved dramatically (on average 20% faster on the corners); so while in lvl 2 I would hit 140mph on the main straight in lvl 4 I stayed in 3rd gear 9k rpm even on the straight not trying to speed the straights and just focus on the corners and yet my overall lap times were faster; something both Laura and Pete pointed out. Definitely noticeable on the streets too. I'll post my personal riding issue in the Student Success Stories Still have a long ways to go but you guys gave me a great head start; I will be practicing until the next time.   9. Pressure... bigger the tire the more pressure it can handle. Ignore street riding where tires don't heat up as much as racers on a track and temperature/pressure (direct linear correlation) becomes a major issue for the tires. Heat building up inside the tire creates more pressure; pressure is also the force over an area so the smaller the contact patch the more pressure on the tires once again... nobody wants a blowout http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/122707. Of course heat on the exterior of the tire and shearing also becomes an issue and you can control it to an extent w/ the size of the contact patch but becomes a careful balance; which is why in this regard I said larger contact patch is better for the most part.

The problem with contact patch is majority of racing community (motorcycle, car, drag) don't have the correct understanding of it; because they get their info from other people in that community that also got it wrong to begin with (ie. "my tire guy said..." or "(some famous racer or person involved in the community) said this and I'm going to take his word over something from physics" which then follows up with "yeah that may be true on paper but in the real world there are a lot of other things going on and I know contact patch gives better grip"). Personally I always feel someone loses credibility when they say more contact patch gives more grip. As for the drag racing guys here's an article from someone in drag racing giving his explanation and clearly stating contact patch is does not give more grip but for shearing purposes and pressure. http://www.onallcylinders.com/2016/07/14/drag-slicks-traction/ One could go on stating contact patch and larger contact patch is a good thing and leave out any physics aspect of it; don't ever say gives more grip and would be 100% correct. But they go on to give the "science" explanation for no reason w/o knowing any science but what they heard or read on some forums and give the wrong information to many innocent bystanders. In fact if you take any classical mechanics in physics and get to the chapter on friction most common question in class given to students is "If the friction force equation is solely dependent on the coefficient of friction and the normal force and has no input based on the size of the contact to the surface then why do race cars have larger tires?" I promise almost everyone taking physics google this question and most information out there especially on forums including physics forums get it wrong. For those that say it's to get more grip; all you need to do is ask where did they learn that from? It's never from a physics class. You can watch the MIT Physics class on youtube that covers this exact topic and that question being asked as an assignment. Just know contact patch does not give more grip... but contact patch is important and you want to have the largest contact patch possible (for the most part). As for why it's important if you really care it's primarily for pressure. When dealing with fields like drag cars, and to some extent with motorcycles with softer compounds it also has to do w/ shearing. Sorry just a pet peeve of mine -.- (something CSS UK at some seminar also got wrong w/ some tire rep at an expo; need to find that video link) P.S. on a side note... not one instructor at CSS lvl 1+2 at NJMP said this so I was very pleased They left it at more contact patch and nothing else (intentional or not). See you guys at NJMP again in a little over a week.
  11. Yeah that video with the audio cutting out alot. I prefer instructions that cover what need to happen, ways you can accomplish it, then which best suits the individual. Even the pros don't all ride exactly the same way.
  12. Only problem I have is he says the sitting fist length from the tank is the "old school" way and you should ride up on the tank. In another video from a different seminar he says the exact opposite and says you should ride about a fist length away. Great rider not the best instructor. In many sports the best coaches aren't the best/successful athletes, but those that can analyze and instruct, not to say one couldn't be both.
  13. You bring up a very good point... also I probably misspoke in terms of the loss of friction in respect to the change in the normal force. I will say there's parts I am not very well versed when it comes to the artificial gravity experienced in circular motion so I will make statements clear when I am making assumptions and personal opinions here. One thing to note is that first it's the increase in weight experienced by the rider not necessarily the increased in weight of the bike and the rider. That's not to say the weight gain isn't significant; I just don't know how much... best case let's say only the wheels cause the centripetal acceleration and with the good suspension the rest of the bike and rider experiences the 1g laterally, but can't be the full weight of the bike no matter what right? (assumption). The other thing to note is I based it purely based on a horizontal flat surface of the road; where in a banked turn you definitely can go faster. So even with the lateral g-force how much of it is affecting it in the vertical direction to affect the normal force perpendicular to the road surface to the tire; how much is the vertical component. Assuming CG is same is the lateral g-force horizontal and parallel to the ground? But yes the friction lost should/could be negligible even on a flat surface. Regardless like I said you are correct I shouldn't have mentioned the friction part; as the centripetal force is what really causes the loss of friction with the velocity component being squared which is why we go slow (even though amount of friction may not have changed?).
  14. 1. Need to understand how bikes turn to know that you're right hanging off doesn't make a difference; the steering and lean affects how a bike turns. But there seems to be a misconception on why we "need" to hang off the bike and some assume it's to cause "less" lean angle rather than to offset the balance to "keep" the bike in its turn. I'll cover the science of it later as it is a lot of info -.- But in short more lean angle the less steering angle for the same radius of turn needed; this is the most important factor to understand. Which is why you can always turn a bike by counterweighting; but this is a little harder for sportbikes than say dirt bikes or flat track riders who in fact counterweight to lean the bike. When hanging off in a turn you can let off the handlebars (a little and safely) and see the bike maintain its lean throughout the turn. Take a rider off the bike for analysis (watch youtube videos of idiots falling off their bikes doing wheelies and the bike remains upright but coutersteers by itself back and forth; due to Newtonian laws) and we see that the bike would countersteer back to the opposite if we don't apply additional forces to prevent it. 2. This is subjective; but for sportbikes you can only counterweight so far before the bike will just fall to the ground unless you're going fast enough where the centripetal force keeps you up. You can also lean into the turns upright and lean with the bike as most DMV manuals says to do when at speed. But now the topple over effect is again raised because you essentially become a tall lever; and the greater the distance of the lever from the fulcrum the less force required to torque the lever. So basically easier to topple over plus it's harder to balance yourself upright for continuous turns on sportbikes. Hanging off brings your Center of Mass/Center of Gravity (CM/CG) both same in this case lower and makes the bike more balanced in the turn. 3. Similar to 2 when talking about dirt bikes or lighter bikes counterweighting is easy; bring a 400lbs bike into play it's very hard to balance the weight when you weigh half the bike or less. 4. Proper steering techniques steers the bike; position comes into play depending on how fast you go. Try counterweighting at 80mph on a sports bike -.- 5.   15. I'll try and explain it the best that I can. First in any engineering physics class covering classical mechanics involving circular motions will state in the book Centrifugal "Force" in quotes usually or at least call it a fake/false force. Second is to understand reference frames and in classical mechanics we use non-inertial reference frames. Take an example of you standing in the back of a pickup truck doing 50mph and throwing a tennis ball off the back away from the direction of travel; and you throw this ball say 20mph. Now you the thrower of the ball observe it clear as day moving in the opposite direction from the direction you're travelling... and at a rate of 20mph (which is correct in reference to you and the truck)... now take an observer standing off to the side of the road looking perpendicular to the road and he sees the ball still moving in the direction of the travel of the truck and you just at 30mph (which is also correct in reference to the observer). But which is "correct"; now ignore air resistance and gravity to the mix as we're not trying to calculate the rate of decrease of the speed and arc of the motion and so on... we're applying ideal physics to understand the parts we want to figure out what's going on. So in circular motion for an inertial reference frame one common example is that of you sitting on spinning disc (say a merry go round) and releaseing a ball on the disc and observe it in an outward motion; it's best to actually see it in effect to see how weird things get in difference reference frames... here's a video showing some non intuitive things occurring in that situation The biggest mistake the average person that doesn't have a lot of background in physics and just reads up on some aspects of it when researching circular motion is applying Newton's laws of motion incorrectly in an wrong reference frames; you probably heard people saying well yes there is this inward force called centripetal force but Newton's law says there is an equal and opposite force when not accelerating to give a net 0 force and that force is the centrifugal force. Only correct when in the inertial reference frame for this circular motion example. Another non intuitive mistake made is that almost all of us have been in a car at some point, and taken a turn or a curve, and we swear we are being pushed outward from the curve and that is the centrifugal force we "feel". But it's actually inertia you're feeling. Let's say you're in the passenger seat; on this turn (left turn) you are pushed to the door and say I'm going outward. But in fact the car is moving inward left turn; and you are still moving forward; so naturally you hit the door. So analyze a motorcycle taking a turn (left turn again); you know at any point you were only going straight and you added input to turn left and lean to the left. You can say you "feel" and outward force but analyze where did this magical outward force come from; we know the downward force is from gravity (which is mysterious in itself). When you lowside the bike and rider don't all of a sudden end up moving "outward" of the turn; they end up sliding forward (minus any weird tire contact of the wheel causing a different motion) but you get the idea. That's about the simplest way I can try and explain it.. but you want to apply physics in the discussion from text and online sources; majority of it will be from classical mechanics which is all non-inertial reference frames. A lot of people don't understand that part and apply intuition to the mix and confusion erupts. I plan on posting up some videos on some of the physics misconceptions after I review CSS when I go for lvl 1+2 next week. Personally I think a lot of the youtube instructions out there like ridesmart and individuals would do a lot better just explaining "do this to get this result" and leave out the why part; seems like 90% is accurate and then 10% is made up physics interpretation on their part and discredits the 90% they just got right.
  16. Sorry to chime in on this just a pet peeve... Let's go by stating there is no Centrifugal force. Just centripetal force, which goes inward to the center of a radius of a turn, no outward force. And please don't mention inertial reference frames, if you know what that is then you know it doesn't apply here and just trying to be difficult. And you can't just rotate the picture 45 degrees and assume forces rotate like that, gravity doesn't rotate with you so the direction of forces can't be right. In physics the direction of the bike lean angle does matter because that DOES change the magnitude of the forces. You lean 45 degrees, for simplicity say the CG is at 45 degrees, then the normal force applied to the tire would be COS(45)*N which is why you have less friction at lean than upright. A lot of good info on the discussion mixed with bad physics. You can do more explaining what you need to do to make something happen and only apply the science behind it if it's what really is happening not what we think is happening.

  18. The question is brought up in almost every engineering physics class when we cover friction. Homework question is usually something along the lines of "If force of friction is only dependent on the coefficient of friction and the normal force" then why do race cars have bigger tires than your average car?" You can even see this question in MIT's open course on Physics covering friction available at MIT site or youtube... I kinda speculate my professor lectured based on theirs. The answer is and has always been... "Pressure", those that have bicycles at some point you probably experienced a blow out... usually because the pressure exerted on the tire was too great. It's also why you use lower tire pressure when on the track compared to the streets. Unlike the streets you don't have stop and go traffic and the tires heat up (which raises pressure), and heat up a lot, more horsepower and heavier the bike the more pressure. Ways to handle this is by compound of the tire, contact patch, initial cold pressure, and of course use larger tires.
