Geographical Radius Of Action

Recommended Posts

As I am preparing to move from squid to experienced track rider and maybe racing, I wonder how far are folks ready to drive to reach the track. For me this is the biggest challenge to enjoy the racing hobby.

What does your driving schedule looks like when doing amateur racing? California probably offers a lot more options than the rest of the country. Anybody in the north-east?

I only do track days but tend to stay within about a 4 hour radius of my house. I'm lucky to have Barber Motorsports park, Road Atlanta, Little Tally, Jennings GP, and Robeling Road all within that area. I do notice a lot of people at Barber that drive huge distances to get there.

I am in northern KY/Cincinnati OH area and have driven as far south as JenningsGP, Daytona and planning this year as far north as Thompson International. I would consider TX as a once per year thing and IL three times a year at the most. My radius is very large (12h) compared to my other track riding friends.

I like to stay within a 4 hour radius; I am near Los Angeles so that gives me a lot of choices, but mostly I ride at Willow Springs, Auto Club Speedway (Fontana), and Las Vegas Motor Speedway, with occasional trips to ButtonWillow or Chuckwalla. I also have a couple of bikes that can go on go-kart tracks, so Adams Motorsports Park and Grange are good for that. I might tackle Miller this year, with WERA; I have ridden there with the school but it will be my first time hauling my own stuff out there.

Our entire race series takes place on the same track, but it has multiple configurations to keep things interesting. That track is 2 h away. I have another motorcycle friendly track about 1.5 h away, a world class highspeed but somewhat dangerous track (Mosport) 2 h in the other direction, and on that same site there is a much tighter little "driver development" track that also has motorcycle track days. 4 h gets me to Shannonville, where there are track days and another motorcycle race series but I haven't ventured that far yet. By all accounts Calabogie is the best track in the province, but that is 6 h away and so I haven't done that one yet either. All in all though I would say I am spoiled for choice!

When you get up to 3 h drive or more, it really seems like you need to make it at least an overnighter or even two track days back-to-back to make it worthwhile.

Made a 3000 mile round trip to VIR last spring for CSS, although that was the exception not the rule.

I am fortunate to have a local track only 3 miles from my house, but Blackhawk Farms and Road America are both about 5 hour drives. BIR is about 3.5 hours That is about it for me unless it is something really special for more than a single day

But when I raced, distance didn't even figure in to the equation until there were multiple choices for the weekend.
