  1. OK as the title says I want to improve my times, I am going to be riding almeria in spain again, now this is the only track I have ever been timed and I will be using a transponder again! So I have a time to beat, is it reasonable to think that I can get on the pace and match my time from last year immediately and then progress to going faster, or is this the wrong way to approach the situation? Bobby
  2. Cool, I'm jealous of your California trip, that will be mega. I will let you know what trackdays I'm doing next year, I mostly do knockhill, oulton park, cadwell park and a couple of Spanish trips though knockhill is getting expensive! Bobby
  3. Im from the west coast but live up north near Aberdeen! Do you do any trackdays at knockhill?
  4. When I was at silverstone this year, during a practice session I saw Marco Simoncelli touch both knee's down from side to side about 6 times before picking the bike up and doing a wheelie. What amazed me was that he only looked like he was using about 3 meters of the track width to do do this! He was showboating to an extent but I always wondered why he did that, if there was a more technical reason!
  5. welcome to the forum guys, I'm also from scotland, whereabouts in scotland are you from? Bobby
  6. This is an interesting subject, and I totally agree with it! But what one person may lack is motivation, maybe that motivation loss comes from simply thinking they are not capable of achieving such high goals so they dont even bother to try! Something that amazed me was that Casey Stoner and Leon Camier Cycle for winter training, and while doing it they enter cycle races to keep motivated, the amazing thing is that they are racing with the front runners for the win, then look at Dovitzioso, he got to an age where major Italian football (soccer) clubs were trying to sign him and he had to make the choice football or motorcycle racing, he chose racing but the point is he was always going to be a sportsman and that was from a poor family without any financial backing, motivation! One thing from reading Lorenzo's book that sort of relates to your subject is when he won his 2nd 250 world championship he said that he didn't think that he was world champion because he is the best but rather that he has worked the hardest to achieve it! Bobby
  7. It is simply evolution, everything in life would be a waste of money if you looked at things that way, but take honda for example, look at the performance capabilities of their CBR1000RR fireblade compared to their version 10 years ago! £10000 or whatever the conversion to dollars is can buy you a very technologically advanced superbike! Thanks to race teams research and development!
  8. Hi Y4C4 Are you road riding or track riding, or both? Anyway I recomend starting by learning what all the survival reactions are, and why they happen, then look at what drills would help overcome the SRs you think are effect you most. Your bikes fine so dont worry what others say, you have the advantage of being a new rider so bad habbits can be avoided! Try this, learn what throttle control rule #1 is, go out a ride and focus on only that and staying relaxed on the bike and see how you get on, and dont try to ride fast, anyone can make a bike go fast in a straight line! Bobby
  9. Thanks for all the feedback on this guys, really appreciated! Bobby
  10. How can you ride faster than the very best in the world when you are actually the very best in the world? Something that Lorenzo does the night before going on tracks is during his stretch routine he visualises lapping the track, every time he crosses the imaginary line he taps the floor, his physical trainer Marcos Hirsch times these taps with a stopwatch. Sound familiar? His lap times are always within 10ths of his actual times.
  11. Another thing Jason, From what you have written it sounds like you could have warped disks. I suggest trying a session with your roadie's front wheel to see how that feels! Bobby
  12. Ok so as I have said before winter has arrived here so I find myself with a little more time on my hands, so in turn tend to become a little more active on the forum! So what I was wondering from you guys and girls, Is there a drill or technique that you just cant seem to master? something that makes you think, if I could just get that one thing down everything else would be great? Interested in all answers, even the coaches! Bobby
  13. Welcome to the forum! If your messing with the pegs, rearsets etc get the bmw quickshifter set up, these thing are eating gearboxes but if left with the standard footpegs there doesn't seem to be a problem!
  14. Didn't Soft Science come out between Twist I & II ? Cobie/Keith: please chip in here. Kai I cant be 100% certain of when SS was released Kai but order I read them in was twist, twist 2, then SS! regardless off their order of release though the next book will still be the 4th! Ilook forward to it being released, I suspect that all us forum members may have had a sneak peek at the books contents just by reading certain things on this forum! Bobby Then how was the third book not called TOTW 3? I'm not sure they put too much stock into the exact order you read them when naming/numbering their books. I stand corrected Kai lol, Jason, I think twist of the wrist 2 was called twist 2 since it was the second twist book even though as Kai pointed out it is the third book released, it would make sense then that if the next book was to use the twist name it would be twist 3, even though it would be the fourth book! As for the order they are read in, I think most people start with 2, then get into it and then go and buy twist 1, I think that a much lower percentage of people read SS which is a shame as its a really good book but can be tough going at times! Bobby LOL. We all knew that all along, Captain Obvious. We were just waiting for you to catch up. Hmm what exactly are you talking about? Since I appear to have made a fool of myself!
  15. It is for people that drive like this that ABS had to be invented!
  16. Cmon, detracts from your riding experience, really? Your opinions are welcome Erlik, all I am saying is for such an active member on this forum I dont understand why you dont want to try to learn or even try the techniques, but instead argue against them with some titbit from your massive riding experience! From every skill and technique I have learned from the school none of them have ever taken anything from my riding experience, actually It is much more enjoyable! Or maybe I'm just a boring person for not dragging hard parts on the street! Bobby

  18. Thanks for the pointers fajita dave, I dont have a sreering damper, but the first time I rode across a muddy field I lost the front and fell off, this is when I discovered you need to be very loose on the bars to let the front wheel find its way. I think Keith has written something about this in one of the twist books! Bobby
  19. It seems a shame for people like harnois going to the trouble of writing so much, and putting his opinion to a thread just to have the OP change and contradict what he has previously written rather than admitting he was wrong. Its not the first time someone has come along and tried to contradict the techniques taught at the school yet without ever attending in the first place, At the end of the day what we have here is a dude that thinks its cool to trail brake and drag hard parts on the road, but has so much experience that his way is right and everyone else is wrong! I cant argue with any of it as I only have 17 years experience, but then I am also open to learning and improving my riding as much as possible!
  20. Man that video is brutal, was there any need to keep th cam on him as he just lay there! Anyway its off cambers and crests etc that make race tracks quite a challenge so we have to learn to deal with them and find the best way round them, your fear comes from other peoples crashes and as I said before I can personally relate to that feeling, the advantage you have is that you haven't crashed at that turn, you also dont know the condition of the bike, how warm the tyres were etc of the guy in the vid! What do you think the guy in the vid did wrong? I think had he obeyed TC rule #1 he would either have went off the low side or made a very cool slidebike vid instead of a highside vid! You mention that you think you have to take more risk, I disagree with that, its not about risking or being brave, its about learning the physics of how a bike handles and applying that knowledge! I have been track riding a few years now and still consider my self a newby, and one thing for sure is you never stop learning! Also even if that turn does lead onto the straight, why does that make it worthy of more risk than any other turn? P.S. There's also a part in the book that tells you to repeat TC rule #1 to yourself 2000 times, you should try it, I found that 437 times did fine though lol Bobby
  21. Hi Johnny, I got a 2000 yamaha YZ250, so a 2 stroker, Its a bit rough around the edges but a good fun bike for starting out! after just one day I am hooked and for the first time ever I'm not that bothered that winter has arrived (except for the dark nights)! I checked out that Geoff Mayes school you mentioned but unfortunately the northern dates are in summer so maybe next year but for now I will just self teach myself with you tube vids and just generally have fun at the track! Bobby
  22. OK so for the winter I decided to buy myself a motocross bike, I have been out on it once and typically me decided I wanted to fly before I could crawl so to speak, so Ihad been hitting this jump a few times and decide it was time to go for some big air and flipped the bike slamming me into the dirt, so a bit battered and bruised I decided it best to learn how to ride this thing! The main thing I learned was just how loose on the bars you have to be with these things! Anyway what I was wondering is they say all the best racers come from a dirt riding background, But since I have taken to this sport the other way round, can I expect it to help me improve my track riding when I get back to it next spring! It seemed the ideal winter sport for me as our dirt tracks are open all year round! Also its just so much fun! Bobby
  23. LOL Eirik, I am guessing you have never been in the BMW M5 ringtaxi with Sabine or any of the other ex race drivers that drive them, I had a lesson in late braking that had my heart in my mouth, though that was in a car so not alot to compare with bikes! As for the problems the OP is experiencing, I would say visual issues, every time I feel like I m going to fast I remember my L3 coach Butch signalling for me to get my head up! Bobby
  24. Good topic this, and I think we all hit this problem sometimes, a couple of things I'd like to add though! You mention more than once that you have seen alot of riders highside at this corner, is this creating a psychological barrier for you? Do you know what they did wrong to cause the crash? I only ask this as I saw someone highside right in front of me on the Nurburgring and for some reason thought there must be something wrong with that corner and tip-toed round it the rest of the day! I dont kow the turn but Another point I'd like to put across is, have you actually tried applying TC rule #1 at this corner? You back off to search for traction, but have you ever actually lost traction here? Has it crossed your mind that it might be ok to have a little slide in this turn? Here's an approach I would suggest, the next time you approach this turn use your usual RPs and take the line you normally would. begin by entering a bit slower than you have been and focus on TC rule #1, (rememember to relax on the bars), gradually increase your entry speed and use a good consistent roll on, if you get to a point where you are comfortable with the amount of lean angle you are using, hold your entry speed and then gradually increase the amount you roll on the throttle. by riding like this you are in complete control and may even be surprised just how much traction you have, if you get to the point where you can get a little slide on the crest, then the corner is yours, you will no longer fear it and may even try for a bigger slide! Remember, relaxed on the bars, TC rule #1 always, Do not chop the throttle! Hay this is only my mear opinion, I am not a coach or anything, just another member on a riding forum, so take it easy and find what works best for you! Bobby
