Just dropping in to let everyone know that school alum and level 4 student Austin DeHaven just won the 2010 AMA Supersport Young Guns Championship this last weekend. This was Austin's first professional season of competition as he just turned 16yrs old in april. The first thing Austin said on the podium when asked how he felt about his winning the championship he commented that one of the major things was all the hard work, help and dedication he has received over the last few years from Keith and all staff at the school.. At Laguna Austin (a school alum) ran a 1:29.97 in Suspersport qualifing on a Yamaha R6.. This is a more realistic look at lap times on reasonable machines, as in supersport we are not allowed all the fancy electronics, and chassis geometry mods they can do in sport bike. So in short a Supersport machine is the same spec as you would see at a local club race, just with faster riders, haha. I believe the OP though was refering too 650 and 1000 twins if I am correct, if so the 650 twins are fairly slow compared to 1000+cc twins like the ducati, aprilia, etc. At some tracks 600cc inline four type bikes like the R6 can be faster then a similar 1000cc bike like an R1. It really depends on the situation and rider. With similar setups (motor, suspension, etc) the modern bikes are very close. Recently Karl Lowery won the Willow Springs Formula 1 open class race twice on a 600 (R6) against a full field of 1000 superbikes.. For most riders a 600 is more then enough of a machine.

So I know a few of you know Austin, and a few dont. Austin just turned 16 yrs old a few weeks ago and is now eligible to race AMA supersport. So this last weekend at Infineon raceway Austin made his PRO racing debut at one of the toughest tracks in the country. With a few nerves he took a 5th place in race one, but in race two with the first race jitters out of the way he took an amazing 4th place finish, that culminated with a drag race to the line banging bars and elbows all the way across, missing out on a podium by .014 of a sec. So close... but a great result none the less. Austin raced in the front pack all weekend and was always a competitor for the podium. The last lap of race two saw him overtake 3 riders and climb from 6th to third and back to 4th at the line. It was crazy, fun, and exciting. Also I must say AMA is a whole new place. I have rarely felt so welcome in a paddock. It was organized, friendly and run so professionally. So for those that have felt burned by the issues of the past, I ask put that behind us and lets support the series. It really was a great experience. So looking forward we are trying to put some sponsorship together to make the rest of the AMA rounds. With Austin showing how competitive he is we really want to go for some more good finishes. So if you all know any companies that might be interested in jumping on board and getting some exposure with a front runner please let us know.. we gotta cover the $2k a weekend tire bill.. haha!! Lastly we want to thank Keith and the rest of the staff at the school, Austin's amazing progression on the 600 has been mostly in part to the education and dedication of the staff here and there is no way he could have done it without all of you, so this result if for everyone..! next we need that win! ok here are a few pics of the weekend over the rise into 9a on the pit wall with the new paint scheme signing autographs for the fans during the pregrid fan walk yeah ok, I am not the hottest umbrella girl.. and on the grid ready for race 2 thanks Eric and Austin

haha. nice pics.. Ok I can add one. Most of you all know Austin my son. We did start him out early, the first pic he was about 8ish. At Fontana AMA race around 2002 here is his first time ever touching a motorcycle And this is him now at 15 this last November at Road Atlanta for the WERA GNF. He'll be starting his first AMA season this year Couldn't have gotten here without Keith and the team without a doubt.
