  1. Thanks bgh, that helps a lot. What I'm looking for is more front end dig on the exit drive. Rather than having the bike tending to wander to the outside of the exit on acceleration, I'd like the front end to remain more planted. I'll try your recommendation and thanks for the walk through on how to do it. Have a good week.
  2. I had brief talk with AMA superstock guys this weekend about GSXRs and chassis geometry. At the moment I cannot afford a Penske. These fellows recommended shimming the rear shock near it's top attachment point using a couple of washers. Anybody here with experience in such a procedure? TIA
  3. First time out on the '01 GSXR 1000, first time at Road America using full track.( Attended Level 1 in '02 using CSS Kawi., half track.) One word described the weekend-cold. Entered the 30 minute GTO for Friday and the twin sprints of Unlimited SS and Unl Grand Prix held Sat/Sun. Friday is the running for GT classes in CCS. The 30 minutes gave plenty of time to acclimate to bike and cold tires. Lap one was run at 3:35. Last lap, #8, ran at 3:04. I took it very slow as we have no tire warmers yet. Race time temps varied from 36-45 over the weekend. Tried to focus on exercises Keith puts into the program such as finding RPs, less braking, staying smooth, staying loose, counter steering, and relaxing grip. However, I let my self get caught up in the corner racing too much, and several times had to step back from the craziness of 60 bikes on track and relax again. By Sunday morning I had somewhat gotten over the "holy ###### I'm racing at Road America" stuff and could better focus on RPs, backshifting to exactly which gear for which corner, and braking markers,etc.. I took a few mental laps and it is amazing how clear they were and helpful in finding solutions to trouble spots like turn 5. Incredible. Now, I have to re-do my track maps and add the changes. Unfortunately, the timing systems failed at some point Sat morning and my pit crew was not timing. So, there are no reference points for improvement in lap times except for Friday's GTO. That's OK with me. I could feel great improvements in cornering speed, smoothness, and confidence. A decision was made to put more time back into the CSS methods now that the time consuming aspect of bike prep is relatively complete. I can spend more time in the books, notes, and track maps, and better integrating the study aspect with the machine. Thank You for introducing me to the Art of Cornering. Blackhawk Farms is our next race May 8-9th. Ended up running Michelin H2s, front and rear, and would not recommend an H2 for front. S2s were recommended for front by several other Michelin guys. Thanks again.
  4. OK, ordered the H2s, now any advice for Road America? In particular, how do you guys deal with seam sealer? TIA
  5. Will be running CCS classes at RA in two weeks, April 23-25, UNL SS, GTO, and UNL GP. Bike is an '01 Suzuki 1000 GSXR, PC III gently tuned to 146 rwhp. This will be my first race at RA. First time on the track since doing LEVEL 1 w/CSS there in '02. I would like to run Michelins this year. Any advice on which models? H2, M2, S2? I'll call Tom Mason to order up. Or, is there nothing to be afraid of in running Dunlops? I haven't filled out contingency info yet so there is time to decide. Also, our primary sponsor, Country Sports Inc. in Wi. Rapids is doing an open house. We'll be there with the bike to talk to customers. Is there a printer friendly CSS flyer to hand out? TIA
  6. Well, as result of politics it was removed from the Midwest series. Was supposed to be the season opener worth double points. A few people complained that it was to far to travel, then had it removed from MW series. Just found out on the 22nd. So, I'll report about Heartland Park when we are supposed to go down for June 20th. It was 17 or 18 hours round trip, in the truck, so we're not heartbroken.
  7. Performance Bikes from the UK rates the GSXR as the best bike to take right to the podium, bone stock. A buddy of mine picks up his '01 this week. I'll let you know how it compares with our K1 1000.
  8. Thanks Greg, that is an AWESOME read for the gearheads. WOW!!!
  9. Read totw again, take notes, and write out questions as you read. Get plenty of rest, no drink or drug the week before, or quit if you can. Be ready to listen. Lots of guys wanna swap war stories-don't go there. Just listen to the instructors and grin your ass off.
  10. Going to run CCS in Topeka Kansas on 28th, my first time there. Any advice from the vets out there on Heartland Park?TIA
  11. Money is a good answer to that question. I am in the middle of a tough decision in letting something else go to continue racing-being an officer in our local bike club. Time and money are short. I know you have already made the decision but I have one question for you pertaining to this; I am wondering if you figured out why you started racing and did a realization there have to do with your answer? I started because I knew I wanted more after doing Level 1 w/ Keith and the crew at Road America. That day on their Kawi's was my first day on a sport bike. Hope you make it back out.
  12. I'm curious to hear from an instructor on this one; using the rear brake to settle the front end on acceleration out of a corner. Have I translated the situation correctly? Any RACE instructors care to give away a secret?
  13. OK, Kevin here you go; SHOCK; Preload- 25mm of thread showing above top lock ring Rebound- 16 clicks out from full in Compression- 17 clicks out from full in FORKS; Preload- 5 lines showing Rebound- 10 clicks out from full in Compression- 12 clicks out from full in Alright, now, I have used this guide to set-up my '01 GSXR 1000, and our '02 Ducati ST4s. It has worked incredibly for me and our bikes. The guide will get you in the ballpark. Your Duc manual has great pictures detailing exactly which adjusters do what to make the adjustments. Take your time. Give your self an hour to do this. It won't take that long, but don't rush your self. You are right about replacing the heavier spring with an OEM. However, Ohlins springs are $$$. So, if you opt to keep it you will want less than 25 mm of thread showing above the lock-nut. Make sense? Put these settings on, front and rear, go for a ride. IMPORTANT: Check tire pressure and condition. Get this down and you will not believe how the bike moves!! It is awesome. Let me know how you do or if you have feedback or troubleshooting to further do.
  14. Stiffer fork springs will increase the preload on your rear shock; more tension up front transfers weight to the rear spring. You can expect the front to feel more "planted", but a rougher ride. I have an open ended question; Are you guys looking for the set-up #'s for your particular machines or do you want to know what does what on your bikes? ie rebound/compression/preload? There seem to be some curious people who are asking vague questions. Can't tell what you are looking for.
  15. Tell me what years your bikes are and I'll give you some good baselines to start at.
  16. Mr. Code, do you get tired of hearing "Thank You"? I have only completed Level 1 at RA in '02, but I bet I said thank you 12 times that day. Thanks for layin it out there once again.
  17. I am a lot more confident about setup since I started doing it on our dirt bikes a few years ago. I have to agree with the above comment on taking too much input from many directions. Ron Williams from Maxton suspensions writes a setup manual for Performance Bikes-that brit rag. It comes with 1 of the mags on the bookstore shelf once a year. Watch for it. A Wisconsin state enduro champ 10 years running told me this about his tuning and I'll never forget it, the guys got cajones; " Before I shipped my forks off for a rebuild I'd pull em apart and take lots of pictures. Then, when they came back from the pros I'd pull em apart again to see how they did it, and take more pics." Anyway, I have used the recommended settings from Maxton for a starting point and gone on gingerly from there. I run with less fear, spending less of my attention budget on worrying about the front end. I had a choice, made a decision, and started working on it. Thanks for the advice Keith.
  18. Well, first ?-does my CCS license transfer to Wera #2 What would my expenses be? I run an '01 GSXR 1000 and an '02 996. Are you all full up?
  19. For me that would be Nicky, of the current racers anyway. He has a similar approach to my own in new machines in that there is a lot of respect for the machines. There is all the time in the world to win and get smart with the bike, but learn how to ride it first. He's got that average gut thing going as Colin does which is cool- no chips on their shoulders about stature and whatnot. Of the older generation racers that would be Bob Hannah. I know, he wasn't a RR but his attitude was of an all around champ.
