  1. I know others have said it, but I'm goin with the two-step as well. What made it really hit home with my was Keith showing pictures to the class. First pic was of (rider POV) staring at turn in point. Second pic was from the same position but looking into the apex, turns looked night and day difference. This drill helped a lot with my confidence and corner speed.

Now that I'm done mucking up Stumpy's thread I figured I'd start a new one to continue this discussion. Who is it that comes into picture at 1:55? Cause homeboy was moving! Real nice form, picks the bike up coming outta of the right hander gets a real good drive and divers under you in the left and almost got who I'm assuming is Andy all in one turn. That was pretty crazy!! Looks like you guys are having some fun!

That was Johnny Haynes (Cobies equivalent), though he's on an R1 on Slicks. Ibbott and myself are on 600's, the camera bike behind is Thannaiss, (greek school director). Yeah, Johnny goes allright, he's a really great rider. To be fair, I'm only following Ibbott around. My tyres are very shagged, if you closely I nearly lobbed it coming through the hairpin. Johnny can do 1:52's on a boggo R1 on slicks, I could do a 1:55 on a 600 on good tyres.

Yeah, we had great fun doing that, I have to tell ya.

No wonder he was gone like the wind. It looks like you were holding back. I could see you almost rearended Andy a couple of times, and your turnins look delayed, anyway lucky you to be able to ride such a great track. Does the UK CSS travel over Europe to instruct?

  4. seeing as this page is being used to float off into space and go on about other stuff.......... ;)

would i be required to go through level 1 again having done it back in 2001/02??????? would like to avoid that if poss and get on with getting stuck into the rest next year.......

My apologies again Stumpy, my mind just started going, and questions started poping up.........I'll stop now. To answer your question, I would say no. You would continue onto lvl2. I probably wouldn't hurt to review some of the things you learned in lvl 1 just so it's fresh in your mind. And thanks Greg for the answer that was something I was unawre of as well. Thanks for the clarification.

  5. You're telling me, while practically falling off the bike, having only his thigh on bike as a contact point, he can push hard enough with his knee to do anything other than keep himself from falling off completely, if that?

Maybe that's what "save it on the knee" really means. It should really be said, "You see my outside foot came off when the bike slid away from me suddenly. I practically fell to the ground but I just pushed on my inside knee hard enough to keep from falling off while the bike continued to slide. I was just being dragged along with it! Man, I thought it was GONE! Then the bike regained traction somehow and I was pushed into the seat hard enough by G-forces to pull myself back on the bike. Talk about rider input man! I was GRABBING on to the bars and anything else I could!"

Yeah, that was too long winded. "I saved it on my knee," is much better. :D

That long winded response kinda helped with the mental picture of what's happening. I wasn't really sure either way. But now thinking about what you've said it makes sense that he's just keeping himself up an on the bike while the bike is just doin it's thing.

  6. I just want to add the video that everyone is refering to when talking about lines. http://www.ebike-ridingtips.co.uk/video.php <-- Video. Rossi talks about using 3 lines not 2. Qual, Race, and Def line. Please keep this topic going as it's very interesting to me as, I'm sure others too.

Oh that video.....! I know a funny story about that film... ;)

    Bullet

If it involves Andy Ibbot I think I know the funny story your talking about, I'l leave it for you to tell though!

    Bobby

Well, if you look really, really closely, and you know how Ibbott rides a bike, you'll actually see that in a couple of the shots, Valentino Rossi makes a style change, and the two look remarkably the same! Could it be Rossi learned much greatness from the Ibbott? Or could it be they ran out of time filming on the day, had to do a second morning, and Rossi had to leave?

    Bullet

Sorry for the thread jack Stumpy

I watched that video like a hawk and still can't really tell. Although I'm not to familiar with Ibbott's style but I would guess that some of the BP shots on lesson #9 when they're doing the chicane, I don't think that was Rossi. Give me a hint please.

Edit: just found this video while searching for Ibbott race vids

who's who here? Bullet are you the camera bike or the one getting chased?
  7. There's no way in hell that rider is holding the bike up. Holding himself up, maybe. But not the bike.

He goes through the detergent losses it, knee comes off the ground than knee goes back down. It looks like he's holdin everthing up. I've been watching this thing over and over again, and just noticed that you can see the front wheel wobbling back and forth and then chattering right before he get's it back up. While the tire is searching for traction, he's keeping the bike from crashing. That's why I think he's holdin the bike up, but it's though to tell.

That's Thomas Luthi, we'll just have to have Andy ask him. :)

Hmmmmm. That would be pretty cool to get a first hand answer. Especially with some detail, like a play by play.

Well don't keep us in suspense. Please do tell.

  9. Great reply Fajita Dave. When you've learned the two step properly, you can use this to adjust the speed in which you lean.

As Dave said, there are two different types of lines. In a qualifying line they can open the bike up, and not have to protect any lines. When racing, when the top guys brake, they go into a corner at a higher speed than they're going to apex at. Then they trail off the brakes once they've reached the desired speed and through they go. If you get down to your actual cornering speed you'll be pushed to the side by someone who's going in at a higher speed than THEY are going to actually apex at.

When you're talking MotoGP type riders and the like, you're talking about riders who've spent a better part of their racing careers having the luxury of world class coaching, and using technology that we'll never see because it quickly becomes obsolete. Most club level racers don't even really need to trail brake.

  10. Vanishing point has to do with exits. When you've moved your eyes from corner exit to down track your looking for a vanishing point. Where the horizon meets the road. I wouldn't say it's a fixed spot to look at like your turn in, apex, and exit but just trying to look further down the tarck without loosing a sense of were you are. I'm just a student like you, and I'm sure one of the coaches will chime in, but this is how I understand it. Hope this helps

  11. Man that was a pretty intense race. Great vids. I like the GPS and the rearview all in the same shot. It looked like you had Marvos in the infeild and he would only catch you on the banking, The first pass you made on him coming around the outside, that was sweet. It loked like you could carry much more speed than him in that corner. The draft pass at the end was money too. Great race looking foward to more racing vids.

  12. Great write up Greg. I can't believe you had both brake and tire problems. The tire problem is scary enough with the history dunlop has had there. The brakes is another scary one, not something I would want to experience on one of the fastest tracks in the country. Talk about pucker moments. The race reports were great felt like I was there myslef. Congrats on the great finishes again can't wait for the video.

  13. Congrats on the two 3rd place finishes at Daytona. Can't wait to read the race report and watch the footage you have from the races.

  14. My steps are the same as everyone elses. I usually do one easy lap and then gradually increase pace. I have not really thought about what feedback I get to tell me when the tires are up to temp. With that said, I believe I am not able to push the tires that I am currently running(Dunlop 209 GPA). Tires are better than rider. This makes me wonder if I would be able to tell the if the tires are up to temp. Right now I just trust that after a couple of laps the tires are warm enough for me to push at my pace. The tires have worked great for me so far. This is something I will be paying attention to my next trackday.

Great topic Cobie, so can we hear what your thoughts are on this?

  15. WOW Jody I hope you're alright, that looked brutal. From watching the vid I don't think there is anyway that guy could've made the corner even with a clear track. I can't even begin to think what was going through his head when he came in so hot. As Bullet said hope the guy is a good enough person to take responsibilty for his actions and gets your bike fixed. Good luck with the healing Jody, hope to see you out on the track sometime soon.

  16. Chocadile,

I will be trying out for a coaching position. I have been to 10 or twelve CSS schools but I will be auditing level I for the day. I'm sure I will see you.

Sounds great good luck to you(talk about a dream job). I think you'd make a great coach, considering the helpful advice you've been able to give me and others on this forum. To be honest I thought you were a coach from the get go. Anyway hope everthing goes well, see ya down there.

  17. I'm an addict.

I spend all my money on getting to the track.

I too go out to the garage just look at my bikes.

My parents DVR box is filled with WSB and MotoGP races. Speis in Assen greatest pass I've ever seen :o

I can't seem to stay off MC related websites.

Missing a school day to do CSS at VIR on monday.

Plan on doing atleast 2 or 3 more trackdays before the end of the season.

Fossil maybe we can meet on monday and have the very first Trackaholics anonymous meeting. It'll be a safe environment and no one will judge you for your addiction. LOL

Have you ever been out of town and wondered if you forgot to set your DVR for WSB and MotoGP! How scary is that!

Happened when I was at VIR for the AMA races. I forgot to set it for the BRNO GP race. It was a blessing in disguise. I have a freind with the online MotoGP account and watched the race on the computer soooooooo much better than what Speed plays.

And a big +1 on drifting shopping carts, just gotta watch out for those blind 90 degree turns you could end up in a head on colision, a crash like that is sure to end the race.

  18. Sounds good. I'm going to get there early enough to get all this done before we go on track. Fossil you instructing or learning? I'll keep an eye out for you. I could probably use an extra hand. I'm gonna be riding a black and silver F4i so if you see me stop by and say Hi. See you there.
