  1. o.k what i,m seeing / hearing

    he rolls off and turns into the first right ,and is still rolled off as direction changes and flicks into left ,then picks up gas and starts roll on briefly - then i think it is checked (held constant) as he flicks into the last right then continues rolling on as soon as bike is turned over the crest (as it then starts to bend left at the hairpin approach)

     

    i,m guessing he doesn,t roll off before he flicks it into the last right (i,m ignoring the left kink b-4 the hairpin for now) although i can hear the revs drop slightly but i,m assuming thats as the bike turns .

    out of interest this is what i,m trying to do .

     

     

    so then, I think we've cleared up then that you're not able to roll on, and keep rolling going through the sequence of bends? Final question, as the bike rolls over onto the smaller part of the tyre (i.e. the side), do the revs rise, or drop? So, given this thought, when the bike turns and the rev drops, what must the rider be doing?

    ( bullet ) now then hall bends , i,ve just re watched the vids earlier posted by bullet .

    my question is this -

    from the first right at hall bends at cadwell to the last left before the hairpin i,ve tried to start this as one continous roll on -- rather than roll off a fraction before the direction change ( then little roll on to steady the bike )for the next left and then same again for the right .

     

    now this does feel smoother but of course it means tryin to turn into the left and right whilst steadily still trying to roll on the throttle ( because of the length of time involved for this section of track i may be checking the throttle for a period before continuing the roll on - but what i am trying to achieve is , after turning into the first right after the mountain 1 long continous smooth roll on until i leave the last left b-4 the hairpin )

    watching the 2nd of the 2 bits of film footage i think this is what the gut on the quick gixxer looks to be doing .

     

    anyway your thought s on this appreciated .......... cheers ..

    p.s should i start another post hall bends instead ??

    OK, so I'd like you to watch the second video again. This time, pay special attention to the noise of the engine and the tacho as you can visually see that as he rides through the section. Is he rolling it on all the way? Does he check/roll off at all?

  3. intersting stuff

    still think i can gain a bit of time here with a bit more attention to timing / throttle control at my level .

     

    just an up date got out this week at cadwell again and was wet for a while so stuggled a bit but later on i did get 2 wheel lift off albeit only once and minimal but the throttle drive was much much smoother . i was also a fraction wider at the top of the mountain than my normal although not right over to left but i think it was the smooth application of the gas and the initial pause / check that was the major factor . problem was i only got it what felt like right once . i can see this timing is real important .

     

    which i was a quicker learner though ......

    now about hall bends ..........

    is that a bit of back brake near the top ??? looks like 1 long smooth roll on but i,m assuming thats the wheels comin off the deck at the top - for brookes .

    the guy on the gixxer thou is quick!!! about 1 min 41,s i reckon - he looks like he runs slightly wider on exit of the right hander up the mountain but then cuts back across a bit more than me but a bit of rear brake i reckon ? or the throttle checked for a bit ? not quite sure i,m currently 1.47 best - i only need 6 secs then , ha ha .

     

    I'm thiniking (and hearing), check throttle roll on. You can't keep rolling it on with both wheels off the ground, as it'll only make it wheelie more, causing you to roll off.

    for the record the josh brookes pics are great !!!! but getting back to the real world and with 100bhp less (and talent) - i was previously using a bit of rear brake but changed tack for what i,m doin - at start of this post as described .

    for the record i know i,m quite vain but i,m not interested in stylin it up for the pics just want to get round quicker .

    out of interest bullet the standing on the pegs does feel a bit awkward and know what you mean about pressure on bars especially as i,m trying to lean over front of the bike a bit (can,t control hand pressure so well when i,m standin up) .

     

    as for the momentary throttle check or 1 roll on well i dunno ? i know i,d rather have less to do ha ha but my timing just feels not quite right - maybe to avoid checking the throttle i need to roll on later ????? or a slower steadier roll on -from early on .

    i guess i,m just lazy and want to stand it up and pin it ?????

    just made a comeback after a while off (new baby , blown motor replaced) and got a run out at a warm and dry cadwell park .

    so for those of you familiar , hopefully bullets about !

    took me all day to get back to my previous pace but got there in the end .

    question is throttle control over the mountain bear in mind i,m on a 1999 r6 with standard motor 99.5bhp at wheel and downgeared a bit .211 ntec tyres .

    i,m not trying to wheelie quite the opposite as i,m interested in quicker laps but can,t keep the front down .

    after talking to a few people i get reasonable drive out of the right hander and try and crest just past center of track .standing on pegs and putting more weight over the front .

    but sometimes get the big roll off to stop it from trying to flip over then forks land - boing up she comes again another roll off !!

    i do sometimes get it better what i try to do is check the throttle as front starts to lift then hold steady then roll on .

    i understand the mountain is not 1 regular climb but how i see it a first concave (viewed from side)slope then turning into a convex slope .

    assuming the suspension extends both ends as i roll on the gas on approach then just as front wheel starts to come up the rear wheel then starts climbing the different part of the slope at a different angle and tries to wheelie more - on the same throttle input if not rolled off or checked .

     

    my theory is that if i could jump the mountain instead of wheelie i could get a much quicker / smoother section of track here .

    but am i dreaming on my 600 ? is this not possible ...

     

    i,m sure part of the problem is that i anticipate the front coming up and roll off too soon - rather than check the gas as it starts to rise then continue rolling on - i did get this right a couple of times and did feel much smoother but overall i,m sure i,m loosing time here .

     

    hopefully someone will put me right on the timing / profile of the mountain or both , cheers .

    So, Cadwell mountain, got to love it. Have to say, I've not been in a few years, so I'll have to shoot from memory a little. Now, you've definitely worked out the right place to be on the track, if you go to far over the left, it'll come up allday, the middle is definitely the best place to stop that. So you've consider throttle roll on/versus checked, which do you think is best and why? Next question, are you able to accelerate with the wheels in the air? So, which is quicker then? Which do you want? Speed or styling it up for the pics showing your friends you have two wheels in the air? How much pressure you got on those bars when you're stood up?

    To answer your following question, I'd say:

    - before the turn both pegs evenly carrying weight.

    - into the turn(right hander), inner peg is biased for weight(to help initiate the turn?) but outer peg is "ready"

    - turning in, outside peg becomes biased in weight to leverage the left knee and inner peg carrying weight but not weighted any more.

     

    - I'd want to set up the bike so that I can use the momentum from entry point to apex without further steering inputs after turn in and before the apex, as I suspect this will make my entry look "wave" like or "untidy" and probably force me to correct my line mid-corner.

  9. Might be a bit different in the UK than the way it's all done in the US, but I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do to help me on my way to becoming a coach at some point. I'm booked in for level 1 on the 22nd of April and counting down the days, I'll be enquiring on the day about what my chances are like, but I know for a fact that I'm going to need to get a lot better before I'll be considered.

     

    Is there much call for volunteers on school days?

    Thanks for your interest. Yes, we're always on the look out for coaches in the UK. This applies to anyone who may feel that they might be interested in coaching students, and giving back to the students what the have learnt themselves. In preparation for your trip to the school, I'd speak with Andy & Jet (director and Cheif riding coach), tell them you've expressed an interest in exploring the coaching program and that I've sent you from here to them. you can contact them at andy@superbikeschool.co.uk and Jet@superbikeschool.co.uk drop them an e-mail, tell them you're coming in April and they'll no doubt come back to you, sound you out a little further.

     

    even if you're not ready for coaching right now, there are opportunites to become part of the crew to learn more about the school, and get good insight into what goes. We always have need for support teams as well, so if the coaching thing isn't right now, perhaps that might work? I wish you good luck, I hope you get to become one of our team, it's a very enjoyable job, it's long days, hard work, but very rewarding.and good fun. See you on the 22nd.

  10. A great deal of students come to school with race systems and I only remember one instance where we have had to stop them riding the bike. I think that bike was measuring around 114db by the circuit staff and they stopped it from riding. We don't do static noise tests at Silverstone and I would be surprised if your can caused you any issues at all, as the limit is 105db which is very loud.

    You yoshi being new should be close to it's standard rating which would normally be around 102db. my advice would be bring as it is and enjoy! :D

    Mine was measured at 122dB @ 3/4 rpm, including a dB-killer that took 10dB out :blink:.

    The guy measuring it said he wasn't surprised, as most Yoshi's he had measured was significantly louder than, say, Akrapovic's.

    Like I said, I replaced it with stock and haven't looked back.

    Would love to do level 3 & 4 this year, which circuit would be best, Stowe/South or National?

    Both previous levels taken on Stowe, nice short circuit with lots of chances to try different lines in the same corner each session. I may have answered the above question.rolleyes.gif

     

    My better half is thinking about doing L1 this year, if she can pluck up the courage.......unsure.gif

    Other plans for 2011, I would like to do 12 track days Cadwell/Donnington/Snetterton/Mallory & Anglesey. But the better half and the bank manager wont let me. I can but dream..

    Might manage 4 or 5 this year.

    What kind of corners do you most struggle with? Slow/medium/fast? All of the Silverstone circuits have different strengths really, stowe best for slower, tricker stuff, national has a couple of very fast bends and is fast, south is super quick and has a mix of some slow and some very fast. Horses for courses really.

     

    As for you "bank manager", she'd be very welcome and really we don't get enough women come to the school which is a shame as they make great students. We normally make massive strides as confidence is often low, but we empower them to just relax and enjoy themselves and realise they can be every bit as good as the guys.

     

    Get her to come on the forum and stick up a couple of posts, we have a few regular ladies on the forum who love riding and would be more than happy to remove the myths I'm sure.

     

    Of your circuit choices for trackdays, I'd skip Snetterton and Mallory if funds are tight as niether are the last word in excitement compared to something exceptional like Cadwell, Donnington, Outlon, Brands GP, Silverstone Arena or Angelsey. ;)

  13. You use the R6. The motor cases are paper thin. LOL!

     

    Well stay on the f**ker then! ;) Our bikes all wear crash protection as well, I don't remember a case ever going through.....

     

    We won't be going to Portimao with school this year, though I'm going in May if you'd like to pop over. B) It's an amazing track that when we did go, i couldn't ride as I'd had my accident the week before. Gutted!

    To advise, there have been dates for Denmark added on 14th/15th July 2011. I have no details on which circuit yet I'm afraid, but please keep an eye on the schedule to find more details over the coming weeks.

    My names Andy

     

    I've been hanging around since Sept last year. But never said Hello until now.

    I live in The Black Country (West Mids) in good old blighty. I ride an 07 ZX6r - Green of course, passed my test in early 2005.

    I have done level 1 & 2 both at Stowe last year May/Sept. Yellow 11 & 18.

    I'm hoping to do more levels this year, but also want/need to put new skills into practice on track. Learn more about my bike and more importantly where i am now.

     

    I have done 3 track days. 1st in 2009 at Donnington rolleyes.gif (the start of something great). 2nd in 2010 at Rockingham sad.gif (hated the place, rear puncture didn't help. Total lack of confidence)

    Then my mind & eyes were ph34r.gif opened at the School. Level 1 in the Bag.

    3rd in Sept at Anglesey biggrin.gif (Bloody Fantastic) putting L1 into practice. Damp start soon dried out, nice to chat with like minded people about having lots of fun on track.

    Then Level 2, rolleyes.gif another great day. didn't quite get the pick up drill, but wide vison opens up so many doors.

     

    Hopefully many many more GREAT days to come.

    I use Dunlop N-Tec slicks and I flip them. I have had no issues doing this.

    There is some truth to your statement. I am old. Don't you have a royal wedding to got to? LOL!

     

    I can't wait, I get a day off for nothing. I think it might be the first positive contribution the royal family have made to my life to date. ;)

     

    You do us all proud my friend, not many people can say they race and enjoy it like you do. Be proud to be that motivated at your age my friend, I would be ecstatic.

  17. I think it used to be before the advent of great slipper clutches, but less and less these days. To be very quick however, you do have to be comfortable with the bike moving about underneath you and sliding of the turns when driving hard and shaking/pivoting around the headstock on the brakes. Backing it in very sideways is dramatic, but not essential for being quick on track.

    Thanks for your post. Sounds like you've gone well racing, so well done on that front.

     

    Have you done any levels of the school? If so, what did you feel you could improve on? What did you feel you least understood? If you've not done the schools, ever considered the benefit of coaching and observation by trained coaches?

     

    If you don't or can't for whatever reason, how about breaking down your riding with some self analysis? You say "I could be 2 seconds a lap quicker", can you give that some context? Where do you loose time to other, faster racers? Where do you feel weaker? How do you consider your riding/racing after a heat or championship race? Do you sit down and note what you did, what went well? Consider what was bad and you wouldn't do again? Do you plan for how to improve?

     

    Have a think, come back to us all, and let's discuss?

  19. If I have a criticism/observation of the Sportsmart, is that it has a different profile, and I'd describe it as a rounder profile from the more track orientated tyre like the GP Racer. This means that the tyre isn't as quick to turn and feels a little like a rolling into the turn rather than quickly flicking into the turns. This is more than likely because of it's orientation for road usage I would suggest.

    Does that mean that the GP Racer are 'flimsy' and feel like they're searching for the right lean angle when turned in?

     

    I'm asking because I'm wondering if it's like the Metzeler Sportec M1 vs the M3's. I used to run M1's on my 2003 R1 and loved it, but when I got the M3's I was surprised because especially the front tire is much more pointed, which makes them quicker to turn, but they give the sensation that they're constantly changing the lean ever so slightly. Not comforting at all, although they have plenty of grip at my speeds.

    No not all, they're just sharper profiled and less rounded off in shape, if that makes sense. No flimsiness at all, sharp, precise turn in, they flip over to full lean effortlessly (well almost), but you get the point with luck? Great grip. I've never felt them searching for the right lean, etc, etc.
