Along that line, I'd like to plug the CSS AGV Sport offer to students. You can get an extremely good price as a student on leathers by AGV Sport. Since the schools AGV Podium actually fit me, I ordered my own from AGV.

Oh wow good to know. How does that work? You ordered at the 2-Day camp?

Got the offer details and called AGV when I got back home. Very helpful people. Very happy with my AGV Phantom 1 piece (same as schools student leathers) but obviously new and worn just by me  ) Same is true on the discount students can get on Dunlop Q3's, as soon as I can burn up my Bridgestones, Lara will be getting a call from me to get a set of Q3's.

So beyond the initial training benefits of CSS there are other great perks!!!!!

Oh cool ! Damn just bought a new suit as well. Bought a 2-piece suit but of course zips up nicely because I didn't want to wear a rental. I mean if I had to I would but decided on just buying one. Are those Dunlaps the ones they call 'Gumbo', super sticky ones? Currently have the Michelin PP 2CT but interested in Dunlops.

Its the Q3 Qualifiers, which are the same as they run on the school bikes. They are a track/street tire. If you Google them they are always at the top of peoples tire shoot outs.

The Q3's a GREAT tires, tons of grip for track, last a pretty long time and good initial price. The performance of the tires is awesome.

Thank you both, planning to purchase these after these PPs' wear out. I've only heard great things about those Q3s'.

  3. Don't be freaked out about training in the rain. Most riders make more improvement in the rain than in the dry because in the dry they focus more on going fast and less on the drills. In the rain you don't have that go fast distraction so you can focus more on your learning than your speed. You can learn what the traction limits feel like at a slower, less scary speed too. Rain training is awesome, actually, so be fired up for it & enjoy your CSS experience! You'll love it even if it's wet.

Ancient thread but well said. Good to know this Benny.

Thanks. Good to know it'll be worth it. I just hope it doesn't rain. :( I heard the they still proceed but who wants to ride especially 'train' in the wet?

We had a few stray showers first dayand on second day early morning track was damp from overnight rain but really did not cause any issues.

Yeah I guess be ready for anything because the month of August tends to be an unpredictable month for weather.

If you were to hang your butt off less, could you rotate your hips TOWARD the corner, lock your outside knee into the tank more firmly, and then hang the upper body inside and down more? Would that allow you to rotate your chest more into the corner?

Given how you'd explained it, yes....I think with some adjustments, I think my chest would rate much better into the corner.

  6. What I notice in the photo above is that your inside shoulder is very far forward, forcing you to have to twist your neck to look over that shoulder. I can't see your hips but the position of your knee (which appears to not be in good contact with the tank) and the counter-rotation of your shoulders would imply that you are not rotating your hips into the corner. Often when riders hang their butt way off, they end up pivoting around the tank (rotating the hips the wrong way), losing the outside knee lock, feeling like they are about to fall off, and having to use that inside arm to prop up the upper body.

Thanks much Hotfoot. Yeah sound like you've hit the nail on the head; the left shoulder is in fact too far ahead and I think I was hanging off too much (too much emphasis on touching pucks) which is what you've pointed essentially improper BP. I think I need to cover those areas you'd discuss and concentrate on proper BP. I think my upper body wasn't aligned properly either.

    Less butt off seat

    Rotate hips toward corner

    Lock outside knee into tank

Align upper body inside (or outside the tank?)

Head near mirror (depending on where I'm turning)

I think definitely think that will assist better cornering into the turn.

and ultimately i need to practice, practice, practice.

  7. I found an old thread that explains a lot of the issue I struggle with.

See for me in this photo, I felt hanging off anymore....and off I go.. this is where I'm hoping CSS comes in and can teach me a thing or two about better/improved BP. Boy is seems like I need it. Interesting how critical BP can be to manage cornering effectively.

I guess I'll know more, very soon with the assistance of good ole CSS.

Body type and body position will affect how early a riders knee contacts the pavement, extra long legs make it easy, short legs not so much. You can use horrible body position to get your knee down with very little lean angle, but that has no real gains to speak of.

At some point the knee does become a reference point for how much lean angle you're using, however when and where that happens is rider specific.

It all comes with practice and track time

Thanks and yes I agree. I'm looking forward to learning more about proper BP during my 2 day camp and eventually through the use of proper BP, vision and a bit more lean angle, I'm sure it'll happen. I guess trusting tires is a part of the equation.

However, I do agree with what others here have said - looking at your photos, it appears to me that although you have a butt cheek off the seat, you have your pelvis either straight or slightly counter rotated (away from the turn), so your upper body ends up back in the center of the bike and you can't stick your knee out very far. Try thinking about rotating your hips in towards the corner, which will allow you to also point your chest more into the corner and get your inside shoulder down and in. It will make it easier to hang off more and easier to stick your knee out farther.

You may have to move back in the seat a bit to accomplish this - if you are too close to the tank it is hard to rotate your hips in to the corner.

Thanks a lot; this makes a lot of sense. I'll keep this in mind when on the track.

  10. Hello all:

I wanted to take a moment to introduce myself. Name's Will and I started riding in 1980, rode for about 3 years before giving it up until 2004 when I got back in the saddle. Well....you know what they say, a biker will always be a biker so here I am.

Since 2004, I've owned and sold about 7 sport bikes. I've ridden probably over 175,000 miles since 2004. Ridden on the track about 3-4 times some years ago but never had any formal track training, I've read the KC books, others books but never any training except the MSS so I knew something else was missing so decided to enroll in the 2-day CSS camp.

I hope I'm not the oldest student there...lol only kidding. I'm sure there are plenty of mature responsible folks that in the same boat as me. In spite of the years and miles of riding experience, I decided to enroll in the 2-day camp with a total open mind to learn as much as possible.

There are things i.e. I'm sure the coaches will point out bad habits and correct those mistakes so I can become even a better rider. I'm sure you guys know that there are plenty of track schools but ultimately decided to enroll in the CSS because of their years of experience and overwhelming positive feedback I've read.

  11. I've been to the track just a few times and although I've worked on my body positioning over the years, I don't think proper BP is quite what it needs to be. I've read I think all the KC books, other authors as well and took some brief 10-15 mins coaching advice from a track club during one of their track meets but I still don't think my BP is proper.

I decided to enroll in the 2-day CSS school. I've also come close to scraping knee pucks when corning but I guess my BP isn't quite right. How far can a rider lean the bike over? Is the knee the reference point?

    Thoughts?

  12. I've read that BP is covered in level 3 but not so much in level 2? I'm confused. I thought BP was covered in level 2. I hope not to be disappointed because I'm so looking forward to learning as much as I can about BP in level 2. I'm scheduled to begin the 2-day camp in August 2016. Will I also have access to use the lean bike in level 2?

    Thanks for replies.
