    Hi Everyone,

I have only recently discovered the CSS world of motorcycle riding (training books-courses-video etc). I am hooked on the resources I have discovered so far – its good to know there is a systematic approach to learning better riding technique.

I live in Dunedin, New Zealand: unfortunately there is no CSS school.

I have had a couple of track days + completed an advanced motorcycle riding course but still feel my actual handling of the bike is mostly brute force and lots of luck.

My first road bike was a 1971 650 BSA lightening that I purchased back in 1976. Most of my riding has been recreational. I recently decided to have a go on the track and took out a stock – 1983 Honda vf750. I found the experience profoundly exciting – I think it actually altered my DNA - I am keen to return.

I have since purchased an Aprilia RSV Mille (2002) – primarily for road use but I have taken it out on the track. While I could accuse the VF of handling issues I can’t do the same with the RSV. Instead I quickly became aware that my riding skills are pretty weak.

I am keen to improve my current style – there are no courses available to me so I am doing the next best thing – regular practice + hoping to gain some feedback from folks on this site.

Looking forward to gain some insightful answers to a few questions.

    Regards

    Russell

  2. The scariest moments do turn into the funniest if it all ends well!

Turn 1 at Eastern Creek is reasonably fast at 130mph/210kph mid turn, after I made the mistake of overtaking on the inside, late and not giving room to get the entry speed comfortable, I was faced with a corner that was suddenly waaaaaay different to the fun, safe, consistent T1 I was used to; tighter, now looking at just the width of the track ahead and needing a small miracle to save it!

Pre CSS there is no doubt what would I have caused.

Later on when replaying that mind movie I can recall the special word I kept screaming over and over with ever increasing intensity and pitch..... Represented by text it would look something like....

gas gas gas gas gas gas Gas Gas Gas! GAS GAS GAS!! GAS GAS!!! GAS!!!!

I just like the fact that I can still make those occasional 'leather soiling' mistakes, but that now I won't turn them into painful mistakes.

  3. No stress DB... what I find classic is the fact that on this international site, your from the same town I'm from. Wollongong, NSW (Balgownie for me) !

I'll call em soon Josh, the Sydney coaches have theory night with coming up, would be good to have your DVD playing in the background...

P.s. Al's at the first CSS NZ school today, sounds like a top track, closest we get to a corkscrew anyway.

  4. I'd like to see it!

    Best,

    Cobie

    No problem, here tis.

I sold this bike a few weeks ago and this is the buyers homepage, so no, I did not call my bike "slinky" as in the url :) !!!!

If you'd like a closer shot I'll ask him for one.

    cheers guys, safe riding

EDIT: The Silastic is actually quite soft too, so theres no chafing on the leathers like stompgrip did, the grip is fantastic especially in the wet, the only downside is its not for people who care how their trackbike looks.

This was a Selleys product, plain "All Clear" I believe, I'll confirm that when I get home. Absolutely no wearing off, or pulling off from the paint either. It stayed put and I'm a heavy guy who uses the tank a lot. I highly recommend doing this! Even if its to try it out and remove it later. (bet you end up choosing to not remove it though)

EDIT2: Confirmed, the product was Selleys 'All Clear', hope thats something you can find in the US. Credit (now I remember who it was who suggested this) goes to one of the CSS's own family, Michael Jeffery who looks after Sportsbike Tyres and Suspension at Eastern Creek, working for Steve Brouggy. Great suggestion!

  5. As a side note, theres an alternative for a track only bike, or a road bike where you don't care for the looks. Using plain silicone sealer! Done in strips running fore/aft I can say after a number of track days there is zero signs of wear and a freaky amount of grip

    !

Unfortunately I've not had as much success with Stompgrip as others here. I've run through 3 sets on my road bike (CBR1000RR) in 2 years, they slowly slide down the tank after a few months, to the point of falling off after 6 months! No matter how hot and perfectly clean I have the surface of the tank plastic before installation too. So, sadly as I've heard others with the same issues then unless I hear their adhesive has been improved I won't be buying Stompgrip again.

Nice to know though they have good backup service (Wayne Gardners in Wollongong, Australia), they've replaced the same set each time for free.

If anyone would like photos of this Silicone method pop a reply and I'll get it up here.

    Cheers

    Jason
