  1. Last year the one in Phoenix was so horrible that they didn't even bother bringing it back this year. I was going to travel to see it, but my wife had to take her nursing final and now is going to start working. First time since 2000 I'm going to miss it.

I hadn't been in a few years, for sure the reason was the BMW. It got a LOT of attention at the BMW booth. So many guys came over and after finding out about the bike, were blown away at it's cost. It is state of the art, and priced right in there with the other liter bikes, $13,800.

From what I heard, a guy snuck the bike out, let a mag dyno it against the GSXR-1000, and it was like 12hp up from the Suzuki. Pretty sure they weren't happy with that guy.

A minor point, it has steel braided brake lines on it stock. There are tons of nice things about the bike, I'll stick them up here as I think of them (or learn them :)).

  2. I have some experience of this.

On a road (NS400R) a pedistrain stepped out in front of me, the front tucked and the bike was going over.

In a split second I managed to kick the floor with the ball of my foot and the bike popped back up.

    Was quite odd.

Second to that I was at a very wet race at Silverstone and a rider came off in front of me, his bike was over and about to hit when he took the bang on knee and body and came off. Bike picked itself up and carried on once the weight was off it. carried on for a good 300 yards before gently stopping on the tyre wall minus its owner.

All I could conclude is that a dramatic weight reduction at the inside foot peg, or a push back at that point must be able to re-traction a bike.

And the rider no longer fighting it :)

  3. Would'nt the short version of cadwell be the section with the hairpin and the mountain?

I will be holding off booking until I see what comes of this 2 day camp, as that would suit me perfectly if the price is right!

    Bobby

I was thinking of the club circuit as the short one but I suppose it could also be woodlands.

I don't recall the names, but when i was last there (2002?), we didn't use the mountain or what i assume is the woodllands--run off is an issue, there was little in a few spots.

  4. Are these going to be an extra cost option at the schools, or will they be replacing the current bike?

Also, will you be doing any training with the DSC, or are the bikes going to come without it?

I ask because I'm buying one and the school sounds like the perfect way to come up to speed with it.

    RR,

The whole fleet will be the 1000's, and all the other training bikes will be BMW also, total switch.

We think we are getting the loaded version of the bike, with traction control and ABS. They use the same sensors. The only other real add-on is the quick shifter, not sure if we are getting those or not.

Spent some time with the BMW people at the show in Long Beach, the more I learn, the more I'm impressed. Here is a tid-bit: the key is what you use to adjust the front suspension.

  5. I grew up in South Africa and I wrote off a mates bike (DT 125) at 18 on a dirt road when I got on it and thought turning was weight shifting like a bicycle, but harder.

I could not understand why anyone would ride things that they could not control an I could not understand why/how small GP type guys could fling bikes through chicanes the way they did. When I was 28, I started riding a mates bike CBR250RR and finally figured out countersteering (I never learnt anything about it until after). I could have avoided my 2 accidents. Now I am a preacher of c/s. I rode my cousins bike a bit when I was 32 - a BMW R80GS.

I have since moved countries to NZ, and bought a VTR 1000 Firestorm (Night Hawk? in the US) 6 months ago and commute to work on it everyday.

I have not yet attended a track day, but voraciously gobble up everything I can find about riding technique.

I have plans for a track bike and hope to attend the CSBK at Auckland's new Hampton Downs raceway soon.

    R Sole,

    Sounds good.

I know what you mean about c/s. When I finally tested it and realized it works on bicycles (at any speed, ever very slow) i was amazed.

  6. No wonder he was gone like the wind. It looks like you were holding back. I could see you almost rearended Andy a couple of times, and your turnins look delayed, anyway lucky you to be able to ride such a great track. Does the UK CSS travel over Europe to instruct?

    Hi Choc,

CSS Europe travels all over the place, you can access their site directly from ours: www.superbikeschool.com

  7. Lookin good from what I can see in those shots.

Ya think I should hang off more? The more I read about hanging off, the more it talks about getting the crack off the seat. These ones I'm barely getting one cheek.

Looks just fine to me too. We often have to fix more problems than the hanging off helps.

There are some little items to address, but those would have to be done in person.

    ps--welcome to the board.

  8. Hey Cobie just wondering what the reason for the change to bmw was? Im really interested in how you guys rate the bmw and which other bikes the school tried before the change, did any others rate better or was the bmw thte best overall package? Looks really sharp though!!

    Cheers

The bike seems to be just awesome. Keith has ridden a few of the '10 models, and liked this one the best. BMW is really on board with this, and very enthusisastic in their support. The big bike show in the US is in town this weekend, and we are headed down there to be at the BMW booth.

Personally, looking foward to spending some time on the bike and working with the students on them too.

  9. BMW came on in a big way this year. The new S1000RR is the talk of the town, and our experience with it so far has been great.

Keith has ridden this and some of the other liter bikes this year, let me now say he really liked this one, and I'll get more info (make sure I'm not saying something I shouldn't).

The students will have access to the S1000's, and we will also be taking our training bikes (Lean and Slide Bike, Brake Rig, Video bike, etc.) and changing them over.

Really, really looking forward to this change over!

  10. Well, since I don't Twitter yet (barely made it to Facebook, and just skipped Myspace altogether), here's the latest.

Finished a great day at Laguna, first day of the 2-day camp, weahter was postcard stuff. Then had a day off and went and ate all I could at a good Thanksgiving feast. Then I went back for seconds. Then dessert. All the self control of an 18 year old at a brothel.

2nd day was a little cool and wet at times. Didn't rain hard, but did a few times. I spent the day in the paddock running guys on the brake rig. If you guys have never been on that, should do it. There is more technique to braking than many think, it's not just how large your huevos are.

Now that I think of it, we are going to have a new brake bike for 2010, and it will be German :)

  11. Teg and Skin,

Thanks, good to hear that. We don't usually get that kind of riding history here.

Rode a mini bike a few times in '73, my grandfathers Honda Trail 70. He kept it in case he was out in the boondocks camping and something broke.

It was a hoot, rode it as hard as I could whenever I saw him, no helmet, probably didn't even have gloves on.

  12. I've had 2 cars decide they had some rights to my lane, while I was in it. On coming traffic, both up in the canyons outside of LA. One time I was crowding the yellow line a little (not over it, but a little close to it), and the other was probably similar.

Both times the cars had 2 wheels on my side.

I leave a nice margin on the road, and give the yellow a bit more room.

Safter than the track, don't see how one could really think that for a serious sport rider.

  13. Hi All,

Sorry for the lengthy absence, when we got back from Laguna, I took the weekend off, and it's been on the gas this week!

Here is some info for you guys: I rode a pre-production model at the track a little over a month ago. How about just a flat WOW! Keith and a few of the coaches got to ride it too. Keith has also ridden the new R-1, and the new Duc at a recent test, so he had a great comparison.

I did just a few laps, it was one of (the only?) running bike on the West Coast at the time. The engine is linear, man, there are no surprises, doesn't come on in a scary way, but there is what ever you need, whenever you want it--personally, I like that. You don't have to use it, but it's there.

    More to come...

  14. You'll be back at next year mate, Cadwell will still be there, and it will always be a challenge!

    Bullet

This is true, but maybe not true for Donington, what's going on with that place?

I'm still glad I went, albeit briefly to Cadwell. It is a lovely track, really narrow though

@Jasonzilla, I woke up at 0230 and just couldn't get back to sleep. I was seriously considering not going at all. Too much nervous energy/excitement methinks.........

I think being nervous and missing a little sleep is part and parcel with riding. :)
