  1. How valuable is it to not be as good with variety, yet be superlative at just ONE thing?
  2. In my study of professional athletes, I've noticed that others who are at the top of their chosen sport are willing to discuss and disclose names of people who helped them progress to their level, they pay homage. This is not as much the case with professional racers. They even sometimes go through great lengths to conceal school attendance (coaches can verify this). For example the Makita Yoshimura Suzuki team have Kevin Schwantz on payroll but call him a "consultant". Why is there such mystery about the accession of a racer's career and learning curve? Is there a conspiracy to make us believe that it is all talent, that some are born with it and others aren't? What if we discover that motorcycling is a learned skill, that can even be learned late in adulthood? Just a thought I've been having during my morning shower... I'd appreciate a sanity check.
  3. On my ride yesterday I noticed something that I hadn't quite noticed before. If I turned-in and delayed initial throttle application, I noticed a feeling of the bars coming back at me. Now obviously the forks and bars haven't moved but the sensation of pressure on my hands dramatically changes almost rhythmically just by delaying throttle application...I feel a bit thrown forward. Okay, so now the light bulb goes on (though dimly lit - LOL) 1- What would you call this sensation of weight shift? (please no comments saying - weight shift) 2- What's happening with f/r tire traction, suspension action, and weight distribution etc when I do this I apologize, but I'm trying to explain this the best way I can at the moment while the feeling is fresh; the words may come later.
  4. LOL- I don't know the technicals, but I was finally able to get the 100 & 106cu-inch Victories to blip. I was also able to scrape pegs too, but that's another story .
  5. Yes, I have been paying more attention to this recently. I believe I am getting results....now I need more tracktime.
  6. Perhaps I didn't get it, but yes, I clearly understood that I could better make out the thumb when it was moving than static. When I was in Marine Corps marksmanship training, I learned that the human eye cannot focus on 2 objects at varying distances with sharp focus simultaneously. As the thumb experiment above, this applies to a static target and hopefully static gun sights (LOL). When we ride, NOTHING is static except for our view of the tank, windscreen, gauge cluster, etc. So if we're looking at these things, it is not possible to also have the eye/brain process the view of the road ahead. Focus your attention on the patch of dirt and the moving objects blur. So, Cobie...spill the beans man. What's the new concepts on vision?
  7. There is such a device that can be used to restrict vision. I've used a Vision Limiting Device (foggles) during instrument flight training. There is also a device affectionately called a 'hood'. Yes, it affects you more emotionally than anything else. So how does one train himself to look at only what's important and pay less attention to distractions? Not really practical on the street, but can pay dividends on the track.
  8. Funny you would bring this up... I was thinking about illusions of depth perception. I noticed the other day that as I was really far away from the corner (I was in my car this time), that I felt I was going to fast for the upcoming corner and got on the brake. As I got nearer the corner I clearly could see that I was waaaay wrong and got on the gas. What causes these vision/ speed/ timing errors? I sure this is discussed somewhere in T2, but my copy is in storage right now.
  9. Man, forget that; Did anyone notice how loose his grip was on the left bar, even under braking!!! There were a couple shots of daylight there.
  10. There are 3 corner types and each has a theoretical speed objective that differs. One of them is best to focus on exit speed as stated in your copy /paste above. What are the other 2 types?

  12. I noticed he gets more timid after each headshake. The crash appeared to be the front tucking. I'm thinking that he was tight on the bars. I also noticed that the F4 didn't sound like a V-Twin at all, more like an I-4.
  13. Kudos to you Jason for discovering your issues. I'll bet you felt faster just realizing the problem. You WILL improve.
  14. Jason Pridmore is big into using the clutch to modulate rear traction...attention drain IMHO. Clutchless upshifts (or down if you use GP) works very well when in full-boogie mode. I could see a miniscule advantage for going 5th gear to 2nd, but again I've learned to blip/change w/o thinking about it. Like the above was said it's a very small Return on Investment for something that may have high risk (?).
  15. Problem with "trying it" is that IF it's poor advice, the damage is done. AFAIK trannys aren't disposable yet.

  20. On the street you should be looking and planning far enough ahead that things move slowly enough for you to react. If this isnt' happening then you're going too fast for that situation.
  21. I think he's got a point Too bad engines aren't as simple as the theory. The pistons actually come to a dead stop during the stroke, valves float and cams lobes don't exactly do the job that visual inspection suggests. Inside the explosion container (cylinder) are supersonic pressure waves and other disturbances that engineers must tune after the prototypes are built.
  22. Has anyone considered a mechanical issue---maybe swingarm or rear shock is loose?
